Official Anki for the iPhone in the App Store
Do you want to see Anki for the iPhone in the official App Store for FREE? Me too! And I'm willing to make it.
The problem is, I can't make the application without a Mac - thanks to Apple only allowing the SDK to be used by Macs. Therefore, in order to create the application, I need a Mac. For this reason, I have created a project on Fundable (a great website for funding group projects). If we can raise the money to purchase a Mac, I will begin development of the application on September 1st, 2008. I have spoken with the creator of Anki, and he is all for the creation of an iPhone port of his great creation.
The great part about Fundable is that if the goal is not met, you don't spend a dime! Plus, if you pledge any money, I'll include you in the credits once the application is done (hey, its better than nothing).
If you would like to contribute, here is the link.
If you look through the rest of this blog, you can see I've already developed one version of Anki for the iPhone - but it only works on old (pre 2.0) jailbroken phones. A version which was freely available in the App Store would benefit everybody.
Some people have asked why the fund raiser goal is set at $1800. The reason for this is that I am going to replace my current computer - and only a MacBook pro meets these requirements. Because I am still affiliated with a university, I receive a $200 discount (which is why the price is not $2000). If the fund raiser gets close to the $1800 mark, I will contribute the remainder based upon what I believe I can earn from eBaying my current ThinkPad laptop.
Again, here's the link.

Hi!
I really appreciate your commitment for Anki on iphone/ipod touch, but asking 1800 $ to get a Mac...?
A Macbook starts at 999, a MacMini you can get for even less. Even an iMac is in the same range.
I don't question your sincerity – I'm sure developing Anki takes a lot of time and getting something out of it is more than justified – but knowing like why you need a MacPro makes it easier to decide whether to donate or not.
Very good point. I've updated the blog to explain the reasons for this.
Sorry, I'm in support of this development, but asking $1800 is just ridiculous, beggars can't be choosers and all that. It'd be nice to have a new main computer but a $2000 Mac is not what you need to do iPhone development.
In reality, all you need is about $200. There is a parts list online for what to order from newegg.com to build a PC that will be able to run OSX on it. It's not much work and there are plenty of guides. It's not fair to ask for $1800 when there are easy options like this available.
So you lowered the goal and took the money. I hope that still means you're going to port to AppStore?

Could we get an update on the project? Are you starting development? I'm one of the people who donated to the Fundable solicitation.
